We bought our couch!

We really needed a new couch. The one we have is so old, it actually has holes in the fabric. Actual, real holes. We are talking about holes as big as my hand. We did not want to take it to the new house 😉 (Just in case anyone is wondering why we are already buying all this stuff: We just think we will be so busy with other things during the actual building period that we won’t feel like spending a whole day picking out furniture. Since all the stores offer to wait with delivery till the house is done, what better time to do it than the present? 😉 )

Because we know that the living room/dining room/kitchen area (it’s all one big room) will be mostly white and turquoise we really wanted a white couch with some turquoise in it. This was a very impossible task. No one had anything even close to what we wanted. So we started thinking that since our fireplace is gray, parts of the couch could also be gray.

We went to a store yesterday who didn’t have anything we liked at all and also had horrible prices. So today, while our oldest was at a cooking class, Chris, the other two kids and I went to Hoeffner in Munich. It’s a fairly large store and we had lots of time to wander around. After we saw some of their prices (do people really buy sofas for 8.999 Euros??!!) we almost gave up. Then we found some more reasonable priced ones. I actually liked one I saw but couldn’t change a certain part about it that I really disliked so I was pretty unhappy. Then Chris found one that he said he really wanted. Somehow I didn’t really like it much in the beginning. But then he showed me that one part of it is actually movable and that really changed my mind. It can be a regular couch, it can be a bed, it can be turned into a giant “movie-night-lounge” couch and it can be an extended couch for when guests are coming over. The extra part is not attached to anything so it is completely easy to rearrange at any given time. AND it was under 1000 Euros. Well under!

Hoeffner agreed that if we make a down payment we don’t have to pay till they deliver and they won’t deliver until the house is done. Great deal!
This also means that we got most of our furniture for the house together. The only thing missing is Ryan’s bedroom (he will get the parts from Paidi that match his bed) as well as shelves for the toy storage room and our walk in closet (we’ll have to go to IKEA for those). We already picked out the kitchen and the rest will be picked out at prohaus (even though we might still get bathroom stuff from IKEA, since we fell in love with something they had. We’ll see).

But back to the couch:
Here’s our awesome, hole-free, giant “fit for a family of 5”-couch:

The gray and white pillows are already included, but I was missing turquoise so I went around the store and found a turquoise pillow. We ended up buying 5 of them (for 1 Euro each!), as well as 3 turquoise place mats for our white kitchen island:

The 5 pillows had to be bought today since they don’t reserve those for you for several month. Our couch right now is WAY too small for 5 of them so I really have to find a way to store them somewhere till we move.
Well now that we got all the furniture done, let’s build this thing 😉

We bought our fireplace!

So we had an appointment today at the “Hark” company (famous German fireplace company) to get a first look at some fireplaces.
After about 2 hours in the store (it was pretty cool, the guy actually lit several fireplaces we wanted to see for us AND we were the only people in the store!) my husband decided we should buy one right away. So we did.

First big purchase for the house! 🙂

We will put it in a corner in the living room and it will actually be able to heat the entire living room, kitchen area (which is around 50qm) even though it’s an ethanol fire place. I always wanted a fireplace, Chris didn’t because of all the dirt (he does have a point there). And I have to admit I wasn’t going to put a bunch of wood all around my new build house either. So we compromised on an ethanol one. We did not know it also heated the place like it does. And the fire looks very, very real (probably because it is a real fire after all) ;).

We are very happy with it. The kids are too. Lillian picked it out before we ever entered the store (it was in the catalog), because she loves the fact that it can keep your hot chocolate hot in a cold winter night. And it DOES get hot, I touched it 😉

Here’s some pictures for everyone who cares. Enjoy!

Note that these are cell phone pictures 😉 Fireplace and fire looks quite a lot better in real life. It’s really hard to take a picture of fire with a cell phone 😉

Higher quality shot of the fireplace (note that ours comes with a silver, not black frame as shown in the pictures we took. We thought silver goes better with the grey stone).

I am pretty excited for cozy winter nights in our brand new house now!

(PS: I should probably add that the fireplace won’t be delivered until the house is done and we are moved in. So it’s not like we have to store it somewhere 😉 ).

Feeling very productive

2015!
If everything goes according to plan we’ll be moving into our very own house THIS year! Meaning this Christmas was the last Christmas we had to pay rent 😉
Meaning next year around this time we won’t be financing our landlords new cars and vacations anymore :))))

Also, I swear I am becoming an expert in the world of building related words.
Who knew I would be able to juggle around all those crazy words and call 5 different places to get stuff like
– Bebauungsplan
– Vermessungsunterlagen
– Lageplan
– Katasterauszug fuer Bauvorhaben
– Abwasser Zweckwerke
– Flurnummer
– Umlagen und Erschliessungskosten
for our architect and actually know what I am talking about.
Most of those words are obviously easy to understand. It was more the fact that I had to find out who to call to get what I needed.
Oh and on top of that I talked to a fire place company, making an appointment to see what they have to offer so we get our fire place picked out. And all before 8.30 am.
