Our house is ordered!

Yesterday we got a letter saying our house was about to be ordered (well the goods for it anyway 😉 ) and we can not make any changes anymore at this point.
This means they will now order all the stuff they need and then start building it before they deliver it to us. It seems like everything is moving fast now 🙂 I am excited 🙂
Along with the letter we also got our final blueprints. Take a look if you want, and don’t mind the “tubes” all over the place, those won’t be visible, it’s just the tubes for the  ventilation system which will be in the floors and ceilings.

Order

Sibling tears ;)

This post is not actually house related, but I need to write it down so I can show them when they are all grown up 😉

Sometimes siblings have to share a room.
Lillian is our oldest, so she had the privilege of having her own room. Even when Lavinia was born, we were lucky enough to have an extra room for her to call her own. When Ryan was born though, we were running out of kids rooms, so he had to share a room with Lillian (her room was simply the bigger one of the two kids rooms and it didn’t seem fair that Lavinia would have to share a room that was already smaller).
Then it all started a couple of month ago. We were talking about building the house again and out of nowhere Lillian started crying. It took me forever to get her to say why. Finally she said “You keep saying I’ll have my own room! I don’t want my own room! I want my baby brother in my room!”. And so the first tears about the new house were shed.
We told her that we would just decorate all of the 3 kids rooms, but if she really wanted Ryan to sleep in her room with her, we could simply put his bed in her room at the new house too. That seemed to keep her happy, so I thought that was that.

Then about 2 weeks ago, Lavinia wouldn’t fall asleep without crying anymore. First she was convinced that we would forget her when we move (I swear I didn’t let them watch “Home alone” 😉 ), and then she thought she wouldn’t get to keep her stuff or her friends. When I told her that we were only moving 3 kids songs away (because she has no clue how long 10 minutes are), and that she can still see all her friends and still goes to the same kindergarten and that we will take all of our stuff with, she kept crying because “We’re not taking everything! We’re not taking the windows!!!”. (While heartbreaking right now, I am sure she will love this once she’s 18 😉 ). After all of those issues were resolved she still couldn’t fall asleep so I tried to figure out what was wrong. And then she told me “It’s so unfair! I am the only person in this family who has to sleep alone in a room! I want to be with other people at night! I want to sleep in my siblings room!”.

So we moved furniture around. We are moving in a couple of month and I am spending all morning moving -heavy!- furniture around. Future-adult-kids-of-mine, if you are reading this: This is how much I love you, remember that, and now do something nice for me. Go buy your mom chocolate or something :p (I am just kidding 😉 )

So the bottom line is: Some siblings have to share a room. Most of those kids will be glad to get their own rooms, because they can’t wait to get out of their siblings room. Mine made me move furniture shortly before we move so they could sleep together in one room. All three of them. And they made us promise to keep them together in one room at the new house. So now we have 1 kids sleeping room and one toy room at our apartment and we’ll have 1 kids sleeping room and 2 toy rooms at the house. 2 toy rooms! I realize that this is only temporary, and at one point they will be glad to heir their own room, but man I wish we would have made them sign a contract to just live together in one room, we could have saved a lot of money on that house if we wouldn’t have had to built 3 kids rooms 😉

And then again I am proud. If they love each other so dearly – at least for now – I must be doing something right 🙂

Some people are worth melting for…

As you all (or at least the people with kids addicted to Disney’s Frozen) know:
“Some people are worth melting for.”

So, naturally, we bought a fireplace 😉
Just kidding, we actually bought it a while back, but it arrived here a couple of days ago (January 13th 2016). It was supposed to be delivered to the new house, but because it took forever to get a building permit, they delivered it to the old apartment. And by delivered I mean they put it in front of our entrance door, in the pouring rain, and left it there:

Wouldn’t have been all that bad, but the problem was I was home alone and each box weighed about 200 to 300 kg. Don’t let the small box fool you, it really was that heavy. I tried. You could not put the boxes apart and carry stuff in by itself either.
So Chris had to stop by during his lunch break with a friend to carry it inside. They just about made it, so I felt less bad about not being able to do it by myself 😉
That same night I went to therapy with Lavinia and when we got back Chris was building the fireplace. It looks really cool, but we can’t use it yet (because I believe we should really have a fire extinguisher at hand once we do – even though we’ll hopefully never need it), it will also look better once it’s in it’s actual spot in the house. There’s mirrors on the inside, but those are still covered up for the move.
We are happy with it. I think it will look great in our winter garden, esp. on those long winter days when it’s snowing outside. Can’t wait to use it.

Please note that all pictures were taken at night and/or with a cell phone, so the quality is pretty bad.

Once upon a time…

… there was a Porta Potty.
It just showed up, quietly, over night, on some land where a family was trying to build a house.
The family did not know that the Porta Potty would show up that day, or at what time it did, or why it did. The family hadn’t even heard from their building company that the building was about to start. Yet, the family was still happy. Because the family thought the Porta Potty might indicate that the builders where finally on their way.
The family liked the Porta Potty. Because it stood for something good. The family decided to let the Porta Potty stay.
And they lived happily ever after.
The End.

Totally unrelated to the little story above:
I realize that prices for land around here are insane.
But as I was driving to our land this morning I saw this. It’s our regular view that I see quite a lot and yet it still amazes me.
And so, as for the insane prices, I couldn’t help but think: Totally worth it! 😉

Yard plan

I realized, I never blogged about our yard, even though we planned it right after we bought the land.
I haven’t found a good, free yard planning program yet, so I just used the free one I planned our house with (http://www.sweethome3d.com/ – btw, I can highly recommend it. After all, according to our house building company, I did a better job with it, then our architect ever did 😉 ).
It will be a very, very long time, before the yard is going to be done (because, let’s face it, we’re broke 🙂 ), but this is what the goal is. We will work on it step by step, and at one point it will end up like this: (please note that all measurements are only ideas at this point as we have to see what things will look like once we moved in, so the patio or fire-sandbox, etc. can be adjusted in size). But the plants and general layout is what it will really end up being. I apologize for the Germany/English mix. This is a picture of personal notes, and it’s what we do when we brainstorm 😉

Yard

It should be pretty self-explanatory, but here’s some pictures and explanations to go with it:
– The dark green line all around the front and back yard is intended for mixed flowers. It’s going to be a thing line of dirt that I will put random flower mixes in so we always have some colorful blooming stuff in front of our fence.
– The “Trockenfluss” in the front and back yard will have a bridge and a variety of big and small grasses and will be something like this:

–  “Barfusspfad” for the kids will be something they can walk on barefoot to feel different kinds of ground (quite a bit smaller of course 😉 ):

– “Hasen” next to the garage is because they girls are begging for dwarf bunnies which they may or may not get eventually when we move in 😉 It’s nice to know there’d be room for them. 😉

–  Trampoline: ….. because we have 3 kids. They need it 😉
– “Kraeuter” is going to be my herb garden.
– “Insektenhotel” – to keep the bugs out of our yard:

– Sandbox and fireplace will be something like this: Sandbox for the kids by day, fireplace to stick your feet in the sand and night for the adults

(This is the picture we got the idea from, ours will look very different though).

– Raised veggie bed (for different veggies each year) will be something like this:

– Big LED balls, color changing

– Trees in the top left corner: Don’t worry neighbors 😉 We are planning to get tiny, miniature trees (about 1 – 1,50m tall only).

–  There is a “Scent area” next to the grill that will have lavender, curry, eucalyptus, etc all kinds of stuff that smells good and is supposed to keep mosquito away in summer.
– Spring flowers will be put randomly all over the yard to grow through the snow in early spring. We are totally copying this from our neighbors (with their permission 😉 ).

We bought our entry way furniture.

This actually happened the week after Christmas, but somehow I forgot to blog about it. So here it is. The week after Christmas we went to a furniture store in Munich and – because we were bored waiting for the building permit and it was a very good deal – bought our entry way furniture. There’s 5 of us, so there’s lots of jackets, shoes, winter hats, scarfs, gloves, etc. When we have visitors, there is never any room for them to hang jackets or put their shoes.
And to assume that the kids will hang their jackets up nicely and in order like pictures show in all those furniture catalogs is pretty doubtful to say the least. So we picked something that had doors. So they can make a huge mess and no one will no because we can hide it behind doors. 🙂 – Hey, at least I know my kids 😉

All that’s left now is the PAX furniture for our walk in closet and the pantry shelves. After that, the house should be pretty ok to live in 😉 Even though I am not saying we have everything completely done after that, that will still take quite a while 🙂

FINALLY!

Mid adult Hispanic female with fists in air and looking up, isolated on white background

Finally! 13 month and 2 days after we signed the contract, and about half a year after we handed in our building application we finally, finally, finally got our building permit!

After we didn’t hear anything, the application came back for crazy reasons like some kind of color not being dark grey but light black and all kind of other silly things.

Time passed and nothing was moving forward so we decided to write an letter to the district administrator and complained about the whole thing.
He wrote back a couple of days later, saying since it has “only” been 6 month, we got nothing to complain about, but another 3 days later we finally got the permit.
I am sure it has nothing to do with our “suggestion” that we will go to the press and tell them our story. 😉

It’s here now though and all we have to do is wait for the snow to melt and then we are finally, finally good to start this 🙂 YAY!. About time.
